The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has contracted local company RingIR to develop counter-improvised explosive device (IED) technology.

RingIR will receive A$4.6m ($3.48m) in Defence Innovation Hub funding to develop and demonstrate the technology that could allow Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel to effectively respond to improvised threats.

Australia Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne said: “This funding reflects the Government’s strong commitment to support and enhance the ADF by building innovation opportunities between Defence and industry.

“We need to ensure we maximise opportunities for Australian industry to contribute to our capability needs.”

Using highly sensitive laser spectrometry technique, the counter-IED technology can locate and identify the vapours exuded from explosives.

The Defence Innovation Hub was launched in December 2016 to bring together existing DoD innovation programmes to deliver a more streamlined and agile approach to the department’s investment in innovation.

In November this year, the DoD announced plans to invest $10m ($7.6m) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the country to support the development of new technologies for defence application.

The new small business innovation research for defence (SBIRD) programme will be implemented in two phases.

As part of the programme, SMEs will receive the funding through the $730m ($553m) Next Generation Technologies Fund (NGTF).

Together with the Centre for Defence Industry Capability, the Next Generation Technologies Fund and Defence Innovation Hub are part of the government’s $1.6bn ($1.21bn) investment in building the capacity and capability of Australia’s defence industry, the DoD stated.
