British manufacturer Blighter Surveillance Systems has been selected to initially provide a total of 25 target acquisition radars for a fleet of Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs).

The contract has been awarded by an undisclosed European defence company and the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

It is valid for about three to five years, with an option to further extend.

The company will provide at least 60 more radars in the next phase if extended.

Blighter B400 series target acquisition radars, which will be integrated with the defensive aids suite on the AFV fleet, provide long-range, targeting capability for the onboard weapons system.

These target acquisition radars are already in use with several customers worldwide.

Blighter Surveillance Systems CEO Angus Hone said: “In an increasingly kinetic environment it is essential that armed forces personnel have full situational awareness and tracking capabilities.

“Blighter is uniquely positioned to provide the versatile system that is required for this role and pleased to now extend our products to this new and innovative programme of AFVs.”

The B400 radars are designed to fit fixed, mobile and portable applications and possess high defensive and offensive capabilities.

Blighter claims that the vehicles will be dependent on the precision of the target acquisition radars in order to attain complete operational effectiveness.

The British manufacturer plans to showcase its range of electronic-scanning ground surveillance, coastline security, drone security and target acquisition at the upcoming Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition.

DSEI 2021 takes place from 14-17 September at the ExCeL exhibition centre in London.
