Boeing will provide the services as part of the existing CH-47F Chinook Integrated Support Services (CISS) contract.

Australia Defence Industry Minister Melissa Price said that the latest extension will secure dozens of defence industry jobs. It will also keep the army, especially the 5th Aviation Regiment, ‘well-equipped’.

Price said: “This contract assures 45 ongoing positions for the local economies in Townsville, Oakey and Brisbane, showing once again that we are leading the way when it comes to growing jobs and the Australian economy.

“The Chinook helicopter fleet has a long history of providing outstanding support to operations, both overseas and locally in Australia.

The CH-47 Chinook is a twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift advanced multi-mission helicopter. It is designed to conduct troop movement, artillery positioning and battlefield resupply missions.

From 2006 to 2013, the Australian Army’s Chinooks served as key lift and troop transport capability on operations in Afghanistan.

Recently, they were deployed in support of ‘Operation Bushfire Assist’ during 2019-2020.
