The device is designed to integrate with the Samsung Tab Active5 Tactical Edition, transforming standard tablets into mobile command centres.

The Grip TA5 features a modular design and supports multiple platforms, allowing operators to manage various robotic assets in real time. This capability enhances adaptability and response times during missions.

According to AeroVironment, the system supports intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), target acquisition and tracking, command and control (C2), and fire control operations. It enables direct management of lethal payloads, loitering munitions and direct-fire weapons.

In addition, the controller complies with MIL-STD-810 standards and includes advanced software security, networking features and hot-swapping capabilities.

AeroVironment autonomous systems president Trace Stevenson said: “Our ability to deliver effective, next-generation solutions at mission scale and speed positions AV as a top developer and manufacturer in the defence industry.

“The Grip TA5 is more than a controller. It is a force multiplier that brings speed, interoperability and future-ready capabilities to the modern war fighter.”

In May, AeroVironment secured a $5.1m contract from the US Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office. The contract is for its Tomahawk Ground Control Station product line to support the Human-Machine Integrated Formations rapid prototyping initiative.

The Grip TA5 was chosen as the Dismounted Common Controller to enhance human-machine collaboration and improve battlefield command.

AeroVironment had previously developed prototypes based on the Samsung Tab Active3 for the US Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030 initiative.

The Grip TA5 incorporates insights gained from this experience, adding interoperability and multi-mission functionality to meet US Army requirements for various programmes. It remains compatible with Marine Corps initiatives such as the Marine Air-Ground Tablet.

The Grip TA5 expands AV’s Tomahawk Ground Control Station line-up, which also includes the Grip S20 designed for the Samsung Galaxy S20 Tactical Edition smartphone.

In response to operator requests for larger screens, the Grip TA5 provides a ruggedised solution with an expandable port for dual 8in displays to enhance visibility and operational efficiency.

The controller is set to begin shipping in late 2025 as part of standard catalogue configurations or as an alternative option with AV platforms.

Earlier this month, AV delivered the initial two mobile counter-uncrewed aircraft system prototype Laser Weapon Systems to the US Army.
