Harris won $1.5bn NGA contracts to deliver GEOINT data to US military
Harris secured three contracts with a total ceiling value of $1.5bn to deliver geospatial data services to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) for use by the US military across the globe.
Under the three multi-award indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contracts, the company will be responsible for providing the services to NGA for up to ten years.

As part of the project, Harris will be committed to develop, manage and distribute high-quality geospatial-intelligence (GEOINT) data that will also be used by the US intelligence community.
ADF to upgrade land capabilities with acquisition worth $1.4bn
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is set to upgrade its land capabilities with the procurement of 1,044 additional new-generation medium and heavy trucks, 872 modules and 812 trailers worth $1.4bn.
The additional vehicles and their associated modules and trailers would facilitate logistics support through the movement of assets and supplies in combat, humanitarian, natural disaster relief and training.
Australian Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said: “These modern trucks will be used for a broad range of military contingencies, from resupplying combat operations to supporting the ADF’s assistance to Australian and regional communities after natural disasters such as floods, fires and cyclones.”

The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) reportedly approved the $1bn acquisition of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System-II (NASAMS-II) from the US.
Built by Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace in collaboration with Raytheon National, the NASAMS-II system will protect the National Capital Region (NCR) from threats such as hostile aircraft, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones.
The Indian MoD’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared the acquisition of NASAMS batteries through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme early this month, reported Jane’s.
Airbus CEO reportedly open to merger of fighter jet unit with BAE
French aircraft manufacturing company Airbus’ chief executive officer (CEO) Tom Enders was reportedly eyeing the merger of its fighter jet unit with that of BAE Systems.
The Sunday Times reported that Enders intends to develop a pan-European military aircraft company through the merger.
Enders was quoted by the newspaper as saying: “It was time to seriously look at consolidating and coalescing efforts eventually to one. There is just no room for three different programmes, not even for two.”
UN Security Council imposed ban on arms flow to South Sudan
The United Nations (UN) Security Council imposed an arms embargo on South Sudan as a measure to prevent the flow of weapons to armed groups in the North African country.
The members in favour of the imposition believe that the ban would help protect civilians, while others raised concerns that the policy would hinder the ongoing peace process in the nation.
With nine votes in favour of the policy, the resolution has been adopted obliging the 15-member UN body to immediately take necessary measures regarding the arms embargo, which is slated to remain in effect until 31 May next year.
US Army awarded $495m contract for Motorola’s P25 communications radio
The US Army awarded a new five-year contract with a ceiling value of $495m to Motorola Solutions for the upgrade and modernisation of the service’s global mission-critical communications network.
Motorola is one of five companies contracted to upgrade communications for the US Army, using the P25 standard.
This will help ensure improved interoperability between devices, increase security and enhance the reliability of communications.
US Army awarded $484m order for 1,574 Oshkosh JLTV
The US Army placed a new order worth $484m with Oshkosh Defense for the delivery of 1,574 units of the company’s joint light tactical vehicles (JLTV).
Under the agreement, the company will also be committed to providing the army with associated installed and packaged kits for the carriers.
Oshkosh Defense Joint Programs vice-president and general manager George Mansfield said: “This latest order follows the completion of the Multiservice Operational Test and Evaluation (MOT&E) conducted by the US Army and Marine Corps and further demonstrates that the JLTV programme continues to be a top modernisation priority for our armed services.”
US DoD to fund $200m to build defensive capacity of Ukraine’s forces
The US Department of Defense (DoD) decided to provide Ukraine with $200m of security cooperation funds.
The funds will be used to develop the defensive capacity of the country’s armed forces with the procurement of additional training, equipment and advisory efforts.
It will strengthen the long-standing defence relationship between the US and Ukraine and brings the total US security sector assistance to Ukraine to more than $1bn since 2014.
US released $195m in military funding to Egypt
The US Government decided to lift restrictions on the provision of $195m (AED716.3m) in military aid to Egypt.
The financial assistance was withheld last year over human rights and democracy concerns in the country, a State Department official said.
The official was quoted by CNN as saying: “Recognising steps Egypt has taken over the last year in response to specific US concerns, and in the spirit of our efforts to further strengthen this partnership, the Administration has decided to allow Egypt to use the remaining $195m in FY 2016 (foreign military financing) for military procurements.”
CIO to deliver new Centauro II armoured vehicles to Italian MoD
The Italian Ministry of Defence awarded a contract, valued at €159m, to Iveco-Oto Melara Consortium (CIO) for the acquisition of the first ten new Centauro II armoured vehicles.
Established in 1985, the consortium is equally owned by Iveco Defence Vehicles and Leonardo.
The scope of the contract also includes the delivery of spares and logistic support to Italy.
