TT Electronics has filed a patent for a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) that combines the gain section with a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) to shorten the overall laser cavity. The patent claims a VCSEL with a deflectable membrane that can tune the laser across multiple wavelengths, and quantum wells positioned to overlap with the wavelengths. This technology is particularly suited for the AlGaAs/GaAs material system with strained InGaAs quantum wells as a gain medium.
