A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11897825B2) discloses a method for preparing a visual and infrared signature composition (VIS-IR powder) that involves mixing metal compositions, heating, leaching, and drying processes. The method includes mixing aluminum and tin with a binder composition, adding iron to the mixture, heating it to create an intermetallic composition, and then leaching out the aluminum to obtain a solid portion containing tin and pyrophoric iron, which is then dried to produce the VIS-IR powder.

The patent also details additional steps such as using metasilicate binders, heating the metal compositions to form an aluminum-tin eutectic, grinding the intermetallic composition into a powder, and rinsing the solid portion before drying. The VIS-IR powder is designed to be packaged in an oxygen-free carrier, potentially with a frangible material that allows exposure to oxygen upon breaking. Furthermore, the composition is configured to release tin vapor upon oxidation of the pyrophoric iron, and the drying process is specified to be carried out in an inert atmosphere, resulting in particles ranging from -60 to -200 mesh in size.
