The US Army has selected AeroVironment to compete for the task orders, with a total value of up to $248m, related to the family of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and spare parts sustainment.

Selected along with six other companies, AeroVironment will compete for long-range reconnaissance surveillance (LRRS) and medium-range mobile (MRM) UAS, tactical open architecture controller system, and spare and repair parts procurement task orders.

The $248m indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract has been designed to continue for a period of five years.

AeroVironment UAS Business Segment vice-president and general manager Kirk Flittie said: “The army and AeroVironment remain committed to supporting the soldier closest to the fight with UAS solutions proven secure, effective and dependable around the world.

“The IDIQ contract assures that American soldiers can continue to rely on AeroVironment’s combat-proven solutions to deliver the actionable intelligence they need to proceed with certainty.”

In 2005, the company secured the first competitive award of record on a sole-source basis for the US Army’s UAS programme.

The renewed contract was won by AeroVironment along with four other suppliers in 2012.

The company designs and builds the RQ-11B Raven and RQ-20A and B Puma UAS, which comprises the majority of the US Army’s existing fleet of small UAS.

The AeroVironment Raven is a lightweight UAS designed specifically to facilitate rapid deployment and high mobility for military applications that need low-altitude surveillance and reconnaissance intelligence.

The all-environment Puma system has been developed to carry out both land-based and maritime operations for the US Army.

Equipped with a Mantis i45 sensor suite, the solution provides the operator with extended flight time and a unique level of imaging capability.
