The US Government has submitted a $686bn proposal to Congress for the fiscal year 2019 (FY19) budget request for the US Department of Defence (DoD).
The budget is part of the total $716bn budget proposed by the government to promote national security.

The proposed budget sets up a foundation that supports the strengthening of the US military into a more capable, lethal and ready Joint Force.
This will enable the DoD to fulfil its objectives of being prepared to defend the homeland, continue to function as the ‘preeminent’ military power in the world and ‘ensure that the balances of power remain in favour of the nation’.
US Defence Secretary James Norman Mattis said: “In a world awash in change, with increasing threats, there is no room for complacency. Failure to implement or fund the 2018 National Defense Strategy will leave us with a force that could dominate the last war, yet be irrelevant to tomorrow’s security.
“For too long we have asked our military to carry on stoically with a success-at-any-cost attitude.”

By GlobalDataThe DoD intends to use the amount requested for the procurement of several ground systems, including 5,113 units of joint light tactical vehicles for $2bn, and 135 units of M-1 Abrams tank modifications for $2.7bn.
The department also intends to invest $0.3bn in 30 amphibious combat vehicles and $0.8bn for 197 armoured multi-purpose vehicles.
The FY19 submission also includes requests for $1.7bn investment in 43 Aegis ballistic missile defence (SM-3), $2.1bn in ground-based midcourse defence, $1.1bn in 82 units of THAAD ballistic missile defence and another $1.1bn in 240 Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC-3) missile segment enhancements.
In addition, the proposed budget also includes the purchase of a wide range of munitions, such as joint direct attack munitions, guided multiple launch rocket system, and Hellfire missiles.
