General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has signed a $1bn contract to supply Piranha 5 armoured vehicles to the Romanian Armed Forces.

Located in Madrid, Spain, European Land Systems is a business unit of General Dynamics (GD).

Under the contract, the company will be responsible for delivering up to 227 units of the Piranha 5 vehicles to Romania in six different configurations.

GDELS International Business and Services vice-president Thomas Kauffmann said: “With this step, we have established a sustainable collaboration with a trusted partner which has a significant industrial footprint in Romania.

“The transfer of technology and the local production of these vehicles present an enormous opportunity to the Romanian industry.”

The 8×8 wheeled Piranha 5s will be manufactured in the country under a strategic cooperation and transfer of technology project between GDELS company Mowag and Romania-based Uzina Mecanică București (UMB).

GDELS Mowag managing director and Wheeled Vehicles vice-president Oliver Dürr said: “The Romanian Army is one of the most important Piranha users in Europe.

“We are very honoured by this contract award as it reflects the high confidence and satisfaction the Romanian Army has in our vehicles.”

Since 2006, the Romanian Armored Forces has fielded variants of Piranha vehicles that have been used in a range of missions within the country and globally.
