General Dynamics (GD) Ordnance and Tactical Systems has secured a contract to supply 40mm low-velocity grenade training cartridges to the US Army.
Valued at $17m, the contract has been awarded by the US Army Contracting Command for the production of 40mm M781E1 low-velocity day / night / thermal training cartridges.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Munition Systems vice-president and general manager Steve Torma said: “This cartridge is the next evolution in 40mm grenade launcher training. Its unique signature and expanded training capability better prepares the warfighter for combat by allowing them to train in a realistic battlefield environment.
“This capture in the 40mm low-velocity grenade munitions market represents our continued investment and commitment to expand our customer base and develop the best solutions for their requirements.”
The latest contract award is the first option of the company’s engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) contract for low-rate initial production.
The value of the EMD contract will be more than $97m if all options are exercised.

By GlobalDataThe 40mm M781E1 cartridge has been designed to provide improved training capability for the army’s M203 and M320 low-velocity grenade launchers over the currently fielded M781-TP cartridge.
Upon impact, the M781E1 signature material provides an easily visible signature, according to the company.
The cartridge, which does not contain a fuse or explosives, is claimed to provide greater safety during training.
