Nanocomp Technologies has been awarded a $1.5m contact by the US army to develop its carbon nanotube technology which could help reduce the weight of body armour.

The army is looking for new technology that will improve the armour’s capability of withstanding ballistic threats such as bullets and incendiary fragments.

Nanocomp has been selected for the development contract due to their advancements in nanomaterials.

Nanocomp has been able to create carbon nanotubes up to 1mm in length. These are significantly stronger, more conductive and safer to use when compared to existing short nanotube technology.

Nanocomp began producing lighter, more flexible, large area nanotube sheets in early 2008, which have shown demonstrable value in military, aerospace and electronics applications.
