The US Army will introduce the newest technology to assist soldiers in finding and disarming improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during the National Defence Industry Association’s Ground Robotic Capabilities Conference and Exhibition (GRCCE), being held 16-18 March in Miami, Florida.
US Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) will, for the first time, unveil the Tanglefoot, a trip-wire mitigation device that incorporates an interface kit, wire rake and mast in a simple, low-cost, universal tool to help defeat IEDs and route clearance.
The technology could be attached to more than 8,000 currently fielded robots.
TARDEC’s intelligent ground systems associate director Dave Thomas said that the technology was directly requested from our warfighters.
“TARDEC will also focus on how we can get the entire robotic community working together on communications challenges,” he said.

The centre will also demonstrate how multiple robots can be operated by a single controller with PackBot and the omni directional inspection system (ODIS) robots and how diverse systems can work together to better optimise and integrate future technology.
