Nato has opened talks with Russia over the installation of an anti-missile defence system in Europe, according to Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Rasmussen said the first discussions had begun in the Nato-Russia council, which will be continued until the organisation’s summit, scheduled for November in Lisbon, according to spacedaily.com.

During the summit, Nato members will decide whether or not to agree on the installation of the US missile defence system in Europe.

Nato is willing to develop an effective system that covers all of the 28 member countries, according to Rasmussen.

Russia has opposed the plans to deploy a missile defence system in Europe as it fears it could cause a threat to its own national security.
