French military forces operating in Afghanistan have received a new VBCI wheeled infantry fighting armoured vehicle.

France ordered a second batch of 332 VBCI armoured vehicles in 2009 to replace the tracked AMX10 armoured vehicles operating in the region with wheeled units.

The Nexter Systems-developed VBCI is a 25t 8×8 wheeled vehicle armed with a 25mm autocannon, and a 7.62mm machine-gun.

The vehicle can accommodate a crew quantity of 11 and has a maximum road speed of 100km/h.

To date, France has purchased a total of 630 VBCI vehicles and is acquiring 550 of the infantry version and 150 command post versions, deliveries of which began in 2008.
