Around 22 Lynx helicopters will be upgraded to the mk9A standard, according to the BBC.
The upgraded helicopters have more powerful engines and the ability to operate in the extreme weather conditions found in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.
The helicopters are also equipped with M3M machine guns, which can fire more than 850 rounds a minute.
The Lynx mk9A helicopters were transported by C-17 Globemaster aircraft and began operations last month.
