BAE Systems, together with partners Navistar Defense and ArvinMeritor, has delivered three joint light tactical vehicle (JLTV) prototypes to the Australian military.

The vehicles are right-hand drive configured and are specifically designed to be highly compatible with the US variants in an effort to enhance interoperability between forces.

US Army JLTV product manager Mark McCoy said Australia’s participation in the JLTV programme would help reduce overall programme risk through the testing and evaluation of additional prototype vehicles.

“The similarity of tactical vehicle solutions across allies will enhance global interoperability and reduce the maintenance and logistical burden,” he said.

The prototypes will undergo durability, reliability and blast testing as well as tropical environment testing in Australia.

The US and Australia has signed a land force capability modernisation project arrangement for the technology demonstrator phase of the JLTV programme in January 2009 to allow tactical vehicle interoperability and integration between the US future forces and Australian land forces.
