The South African Department of Defence has awarded a contract to Raytheon to supply Paveway II laser-guided bomb (LGB) kits.

Under the contract the South African military will be provided with LGB computer control groups and air foil groups.

These groups transform dumb gravity bombs into smart bombs, and will be tested and evaluated on South Africa’s Gripen fighter aircraft.

In addition to providing weapons, the company will also provide air and ground-crew training to SA military.

Raytheon’s Air Warfare Systems vice-president Harry Schulte said the combat-proven Paveway family of weapons was an ideal choice for the South African warfighter.

Delivery of the weapons is scheduled to begin in 2011.
