The US Army and Lockheed have test fired the multipurpose AGM 114R Hellfire II air-to-ground missile system from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, US.

The missile featured a multipurpose live warhead capable of covering all target sets of the laser-guided variants and destroyed a stationary M60 tank located at a range of 6.4km from an unmanned aerial system (UAS).

The missile was configured with a high trajectory to simulate launch from a UAS in a lock-on-after-launch mode.

US Army Hellfire systems product manager Lt Col Mike Brown said the missile will allow the pilot to select the type of lethality effects while on the move, without having to pre-set mission load prior to departure.

Lockheed air-to-ground missile system programmes director Ken Musculus said the flight test demonstrated that the Hellfire could defeat a missile’s toughest target, a heavily armoured vehicle.

The missiles will be produced at the company’s US manufacturing facilities.
