The nation is instead seeking to strengthen cooperation between the US system and the Korea air missile defence (KAMD) programme to deal with North Korean nuclear threats.

The ministry said South Korea and the US would discuss intelligence sharing and operation regarding the missile defence system at the extended deterrence policy committee.

The KAMD is designed to protect the peninsula against the North’s short-range missiles, while the US system counters threats from mid and long-range ballistic missiles.

South Korea had been cautious about joining the system as it could provoke regional powers such as China and Russia, and build controversy, according to the Korea Herald.
