Bharat Electronics (BEL) in India is expecting contracts worth INR100bn ($2.1bn) from the Indian Army and Air Force to produce several squadrons of the Akash missile system in the next few months.

According to the Press Trust of India, BEL military radar business unit general manager P C Jain said the Indian Army was eyeing two regiments of the surface-to-air area defence guided missile system.

Each squadron of the missile system consists of 48 missiles, a surveillance radar, a tracking radar and a flight control centre.

The missile system has a range of 25km and can reach an altitude of 18km and is capable of engaging four targets simultaneously.

The Indian Army is in the process of finalising the configuration of the system to meet its requirements.
