The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will deploy a new missile alert system by the end of 2011, Israeli Army officials have said.
The alert system, which is being jointly developed by IDF and leading local cellular companies, would provide the civilians with warnings of incoming missiles via text messages during wartime.

The system will also be used to communicate with the general public regarding other disasters including toxic materials leakage, according to CRIEnglish.com.
The IDF intends to test the warning system in a nationwide drill that will be conducted in the coming months.
IDF Home Front Command senior officers said that, within two years, the system will be upgraded to send specific alerts only to those who are under threat so that the economy continues to function during wartime.
Israel is also focusing on upgrading warning capabilities through establishing dormant channels and electronic signposts along major transportation routes if a war breaks out.
