BAE Land Systems South Africa has been awarded a contract worth R900m ($130m) to provide survivability and mobility upgrades to its RG31 mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles.

The contract was won through its teaming agreement with General Dynamics Land Systems Canada (GDLS-C) and is also part of the modernisation work in South Africa.

The upgrade kits will include a powerpack to provide higher performance and new suspension components and transfer cases.

The RG31 is a combat proven mine protected armoured personnel carrier designed, developed and manufactured by BAE South Africa.

About 1,600 RG31 vehicles have been delivered through GDLS-C under the MRAP programme, as well as an additional 566 RG31s to US forces under separate contracts.
