The US Army is preparing to deploy the heterogeneous airborne reconnaissance team (HART) system in Afghanistan to provide on-demand video imagery to the troops.
The system, developed by Northrop Grumman for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), allows soldiers to manage and distribute imagery from a wide range of unmanned and manned aircraft.

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems advanced concepts for air and land systems vice-president Scott Winship said HART could be deployed with any aircraft without modification.
The system is capable of controlling the aircraft flight path, airspace deconfliction between multiple UAVs and terrain avoidance for unmanned aircraft, according to Aviation Week.
The company also has follow-on contracts to develop additional capabilities for HART to manage and distribute signals intelligence and electronic intelligence data.
