DRS Tactical Systems has been selected for the development of an ultra-rugged handheld device for the US Army Joint Battle Command – Platform (JBC-P) programme.

Under the contract, DRS will develop a solution for dismounted situational awareness requirements for US soldiers and marines.

The new solution will be interoperable with the current Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below (FBCB2) Blue Force Tracking (BFT) system.

The handheld system to be developed will include an ultra-rugged computing device, software, suite B security, and will be capable of supporting various communications solutions.

The device will be designed to receive and send force position location and provide to and fro communication capability to soldiers and marines.

Work on the contract will be performed at the company’s facility in Melbourne, Australia and Florida, US, with initial prototype deliveries scheduled for September 2011.
