The new guided multiple launch rocket system-plus (GMLRS+) has completed a 120km mission at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, US.

The GMLRS+ rocket, manufactured by Lockheed Martin and Aerojet, is a proposed follow-on version of the combat-proven GMLRS unitary system with extended-range, adding a new capability for a ‘scalable-effects’ warhead.

GMLRS+ is capable of accommodating various warheads and can operate seamlessly within the existing high-mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) and MLRS M270A1 launcher force structure.

The company tested the rocket last year to validate its ability to track a laser-designated target after launch and divert to it.

The test flight is the first of two planned launches for 2011.

The second test will assess the scalable-effects warhead, which provides multiple distinct outputs that can be selected prior to launch.
