The Philippine Government wants to procure additional military equipment as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernisation programme, President Benigno Aquino III has said.

According to media reports, the list of additional equipment includes jet trainers, surface attack craft, and air defence radars to further improve the military capability.

New assault rifles, arm or assets, tanks, armoured-personnel carriers, force protection helmets, bulletproof vests, radios and night-fighting equipment will be purchased for the army, Aquino added.

The procurement list also included equipment for the air force and navy, which the president seeks to acquire to strengthen its three armed forces.

“There’s a whole list of modernisation items for the AFP and also the PNP and the coastguard,” Aquino added.
