Northrop Grumman has demonstrated the fifth-generation infrared countermeasures (IRCM) system, which will provide protection to military rotary-wing platforms.

During the demonstration, the system’s capability to receive commands from the missile warning system, hit a fast-moving target and maintain jam energy to defeat advanced infrared missiles was tested.

Northrop’s fifth-generation IRCM technology forms part of the US Army Common infrared countermeasures self-protection system programme.

The IRCM system features a modular system, open interfaces and a built-in high resolution infrared camera. It can be upgraded as per emerging technology and threats.

Northrop Land and Self Protection Systems Division vice-president of infrared countermeasures Carl Smith said, “We have taken advantage of new technology to give rotary-wing users a lightweight, affordable system with the jamming power to defeat future threats.”
