Northrop Grumman has begun delivering LRS-2000 Rate Sensor Assembly units for installation on the Stabilized Commander’s Weapon Station (SCWS) on the US Army M1A1 Abrams tank.

The delivery follows the First Article and First Piece Inspection (FPI) in July and is part of a $23m contract awarded to General Dynamics Land Systems in October 2008.

The two-axis rate sensor, based on Northrop’s G-2000 dynamically tuned gyroscope, supports gun and turret stabilisation applications.

The system allows soldiers to fire the tank’s machine gun from inside the armoured vehicle and provides added protection from enemy gunfire or improvised explosive devices.

The company will deliver more than 2,400 LRS-2000 units by September 2013.
