Rheinmetall has announced the addition of a new gun carriage-adaptable aiming device to Fennek wheeled armoured reconnaissance vehicles (ARVs) in service.

The new device is known as ‘Lafettenadaptierbares Zielgerät 400’ (LaZ400).

It will replace the Fennek ARV’s existing thermal imaging system, subsequently improving Fennek’s reconnaissance and target engagement capabilities.

The company added that the order is for 246 devices and is valued at €36m.

It was awarded to Rheinmetall Electronics through Fennek vehicles’ general contractor Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.

The retrofit of LaZ400 is a part of the Dutch military’s Fennek midlife upgrade programme, which will see retrofit of most of the Army’s 344 Fennek vehicles.

According to the company, the Dutch armed forces will equip LaZ400 on Fennek’s 1530-type gun carriage.

Lafettenadaptierbares Zielgerät 400 will supersede the vehicle’s thermal imaging device which is currently in use.

With the latest order, the number of Rheinmetall’s LaZ family devices now in operation is more than 2,700.

In a press statement, Rheinmetall stated: “Already used in the Bundeswehr’s FLW200 remotely controlled weapon station, the LaZ400 is a tried and tested system.

“Its colour daylight sensor, thermal imaging sensor and laser rangefinder enable outstanding reconnaissance performance around the clock, as well as precise engagement of targets.”

The new devices are expected to be delivered by 2027.

Rheinmetall will fabricate the devices at its electronics plant in Ismaning, in the German state of Bavaria.

Last month, Rheinmetall signed a corresponding framework contract with Bundeswehr, the unified German Armed Forces, to supply LLM-VarioRay laser light modules.
