The US Army has selected Arista Power as a prime contractor for phase one of the Renewable Energy for Distributed Under-Supplied Command Environments (REDUCE) programme, aimed at minimising the use of fossil fuels and improving energy efficiency.

Under the contract, the company will develop and demonstrate the system within a period of six months under the supervision of the US Army’s Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC). The company can avail a Phase II option as part of the contract after successful completion of the initial project.

The Intelligent Micro-Grid will serve as a solution across a broad spectrum of energy requirements and applications for military operations and will be designed to integrate with both renewable and traditional energy sources to deliver required power. It will also help reduce military dependence on fossil fuels and save lives that are lost during fuel transportation in military zones.

Currently, the majority of power used by the armed forces for operations is provided by diesel generators that are costly and could be a threat to human lives. Arista Power CEO William Schmitz said the firm’s platform will help the Micro-Grid to deliver greater levels of required power and enable the soldier to maximise renewable power.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) has been advised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and its dependence on fossil fuels, implement high-performance sustainable Federal building standards, as well as improve energy efficiency by producing or procuring 25% of its total energy from renewable sources by 2025.

The company has also offered its power-on-demand peak-shaving system, Mobile Renewable Power Station (MRPS), Man-Portable Micro Wind Turbines and other products capable of delivering energy to remote locations with both renewable and traditional energy sources to help the DoD achieve its goals.
