DRS Technologies Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA) has developed the Driver’s Vision Enhancer Wide (DVE Wide), a new type of wide-angle thermal camera to prevent military vehicles from accidents on mountain roads in the war zone.
RSTA President Terry Murphy said the DVE Wide helps warfighters to remain safe and conduct operations efficiently by providing the driver with a full view of the conditions ahead of and beside the vehicle.

The camera will particularly benefit troops who drive Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and other combat vehicles, which must be closely navigated by spotters to prevent them from moving close to steep cliffs and other hazards. The vehicles are currently integrated with the company’s DVE that offers a thermal video image with a narrow 40 x 30 field of view (FOV).
The front-facing DVE Wide features three 640 x 480, 17µm un-cooled infrared sensors, which provide a stitched video of a 107 x 30 FOV enabling driver to see both sides of the road and also add wheel track indicators to the video image to reveal potential obstacles for safer operation.
The camera also improves survivability and mission capability by providing drivers with wider FOV whilst also eliminating blind spots to safely navigate through dust, sand, haze, smoke, light fog and during night.
The DVE Wide is fully backwards compatible with currently fielded DVE units operates with the existing display control monitor and cables, which means that any vehicle equipped with DVE system can be readily upgraded at low cost to increase the warfighter’s force protection and operational capability.
