Oshkosh Defense has been awarded a contract modification for the manufacture and supply of its Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTVs) trucks and trailers to the US Army.

The $294m contract extension, awarded by the US Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC), is part of the original five-year FMTV contract awarded to the company for the production of trucks and trailers, as well as support services and training, through 2015.

Under the new contract, the company will supply additional 2,500 FMTV trucks and trailers for the US Army, which brings the total number of vehicles ordered to date to more than 29,000 vehicles.

Oshkosh Defense army programs vice president and general manager Mike Ivy said the company has delivered trucks and trailers to soldiers for conducting their combat operations, relief efforts and unit-resupply missions over the first three years of the five-year contract.

"We will continue to offer fleet improvements by developing prototypes with upgraded technology, such as our TAK-4 independent suspension system that improves off-road mobility, ride quality and protection capabilities," Ivy added.

The FMTV is a series of vehicles ranging from 2.5t to 10t payloads, designed to replace the army’s aging fleet of trucks and perform local and line haul, unit mobility, unit resupply and combat support services at home and abroad.

FMTV is available in several variants including a 5t Tractor, 8.8t Load Handling System (LHS), Cargo 4×4 and 6×6, 10t Dump and 5t Wrecker.

The vehicle features 80% commonality in parts across chassis variants, which significantly reduces the logistics burden, resulting in streamlined maintenance, training, sustainment and cost efficiency for the US Army.

Additional features such as the company’s long-term armour strategy-compliant cab and other advanced technologies will provide increased protection for military personnel.

Deliveries under the contract are scheduled to complete in February 2014.
