The Indonesian Army and China’ People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have completed a bilateral anti-terrorism exercise, code-named Sharp Knife 2012, in Jinan, the capital of east China’s Shandong Province.
During the 13-day drill, which started on 3 July at a training base at the PLA Jinan Military Area Command, the two sides conducted live-fire exercises and also included air landing, shooting and anti-terrorist searches and rescue operations.

The soldiers were divided into two regiments, each consisting of more than 70 personnel, with the aim to improve their ability to handle emergencies, in addition to parachuting, blockading and seizure tactics training. Hostage rescue training was also carried out.
With a theme of ‘United to fight terrorism’, the drill also involved a combat-simulation system to generate real-life situations and confrontations during helicopter and high-rise building descent exercises.
PLA lieutenant general and Jinan Military Command chief of staff Zhao Zongqi was quoted by local media as saying that the exercise represents ‘an implementation of a strategic consensus reached between leaders of the two armies, as well as concrete measures consolidating the friendly and cooperative relations between China and Indonesia and their troops’.
Representing the second such drill conducted by the two armies and the first within the Chinese border, Sharp Knife 2012 aims to strengthen the military relations between the two countries and also improve the efficiency of their anti-terrorism forces.
