The US Army has awarded a rapid equipping force contract to ITT Exelis for the delivery of mission command on the move (MCOTM) systems to its 2nd Infantry Division, currently deployed in South Korea.

Awarded as part of the unit’s operational needs statement for a MCOTM system to support contingency operations in South Korea, the undisclosed contract involves delivery of a global network on the move-active distribution (GNOMAD) system, as well as field service representation and integration support.

"This technology provides an affordable bridge or alternative to current programme of record systems and is available now for easy integration into the host communications platform," Harrison said.

Featuring several commercial-off-the-shelf products, the GNOMAD is a modular, reliable communications system, designed to provide broadband and on-the-move, satellite connectivity to the most remote regions in the battlefield.

The lightweight system can be easily integrated into several army platforms, such as mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) all-terrain vehicles (M-ATV), M1(V) Abrams, M2 Bradleys, and Strykers vehicles.

According to the company, the delivered systems will have the same configuration as those that were used in the army’s Network Integration Exercise 12.1 at Fort Bliss, Texas, and White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, US.

The new systems are expected to be first deployed in an upcoming exercise in South Korea, and will then continue to remain with 2nd Infantry Division, pending approval from the army and unit.

GNOMAD systems have also been delivered by the company to the 4th Infantry Division during its deployment in Iraq in 2011.
