Simulator

Delft Dynamics has displayed its Universal Simulation Platform for Unmanned Systems (USPvOS) linked with VSTEP-built RescueSim virtual trainer system during the recent 2013 Kooy Symposium in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Designed to network unmanned systems’ ground control stations (GCS) directly to RescueSim using high level architecture (HLA), the USPvOS enables real-time visualisation of the unmanned aerial vehicles’ (UAV) behaviour, and eventually effective unmanned operator training.

VSTEP Development manager Sebastiaan Otten said networking of RescueSim with Delft Dynamics’ UAV simulation platform opens up a new opportunity for cost-efficient training of UAV operators.

"The HLA compliancy is a logical next step for our RescueSim platform," Otten added.

During the demonstration, Delft linked the RH2 Stern UAV’s GCS with RescueSim through the USPvOS system, which enabled operators to realistically control the robot helicopter in a virtual environment.

"The HLA compliancy is a logical next step for our RescueSim platform."

As well as enhancing interoperability with other HLA compliant simulators for joint and integrated exercises, the HLA support addition also increases RescueSim’s compatibility with Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2) system, which enables the simulator to support both military and antiterrorism training programmes.

Equipped with industry specific training modules, RescueSim is a virtual incident management simulator designed for simulation and training of incidents in a safe 3D virtual environment for emergency services worldwide.

Manufactured with support from E-Semble and VSTEP for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, as part of the SBIR Serious Gaming tender, the USPvOS is a modular, embedded system designed to couple UAV GCS systems directly to serious games, thereby allowing simultaneous training of complete command structure.
