It seeks to focus the country’s S&T enterprise on collaborative mission-directed research across a diverse range of defence capabilities.

Australian Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds said: “Australia’s defence and national security is facing a period of technological change and increasing threats.

“That is why the Morrison Government is committed to growing Australia’s ability to operate, sustain and upgrade our defence capabilities with the maximum degree of national sovereignty through the 2018 Defence Industrial Capability Plan.

“Key to this is a well-connected, informed and vibrant defence science and technology enterprise.”

The development of the strategy was led by DST in consultation with the senior leadership in defence, industry, academia and international partners.

In the next ten years, DST will be responsible for offering required support from a national S&T enterprise to defence.

Key elements of the strategy include publicly funded research agencies, universities, industry, small to medium enterprises and entrepreneurship.

Reynolds added: “A key challenge for defence in the coming decade will be investing in the right collaborations to deliver outcomes for Australia.

“That is why defence must adopt a more targeted, top-down approach to engagement within the S&T ecosystem, both nationally and internationally.”

The Defence Innovation Hub and the Next Generation Technologies Fund (NGTF) were launched as new technology development initiatives.
