Defence contractor Lockheed Martin has announced a bonus of up to $500 for its employees who are working amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

All employees who regularly worked or had to travel to a designated Lockheed Martin facility or customer site during this crisis are eligible for the bonus.

The company has also doubled its previous commitment, from $53m to $106m, to support small businesses and supply chain.

Additionally, Lockheed Martin will donate $2m to support procurement of personal protective gears for first responders and health care workers.

It is also providing engineering support to select initiatives to accelerate the production of personal protective equipment.

Lockheed Martin chairman, president and CEO Marillyn Hewson said: “As we all deal with the challenges of the health crisis, we will continue to perform and deliver critical products and capabilities for the United States and our allies, support job creation and help those in need wherever we operate.”

Last week, the company unveiled plans to continue its hiring process amid the Covid-19 pandemic by leveraging virtual technology and other techniques.

The defence contractor noted that it has already recruited 1,000 new employees over the past two weeks and plans to fill up an additional 5,000 positions.

Meanwhile, Covid-19 has infected more than 1.2 million people worldwide, while around 70,000 have lost their lives.
