The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) for support of AH-64 Apache attack helicopter lease and associated equipment to Iraq.

Under the estimated $1.37bn sale, Iraq has requested the supply of eight AN/AAR-57 common missile warning system, three T-700-GE-701D engines, three AN/ASQ-170 modernised target acquisition and designation sight (MTADS), three AN/AAQ-11 modernised pilot night vision sensors (PNVS), 152 AGM-114 K-A Hellfire missiles and 14 Hellfire M299 launchers.
Additional equipment to be supplied includes six AN/APR-39A(V)4 radar warning systems with training universal data modems (UDM), two embedded global positioning system inertial navigation system (EGI), six AN/AVR-2A/B laser warning detectors, 12 M261 2.75in rocket launchers, M206 infrared countermeasure flares, M211 and M212 advanced infrared countermeasure munitions (AIRCM) flares, and internal auxiliary fuel systems (IAFS).
In addition, Iraq has requested aviator’s night vision goggles, aviation mission planning system, training ammunition, helmets, transportation, spare and repair parts, support equipment, personnel training and training equipment, as well as other related elements of programme and logistics support.
The potential sale enables Iraqi security forces to start training on the operation and maintenance of six leased US Apache helicopters in preparation for their receipt of new-build aircraft, and also supports the strategic interests of the US by providing Iraq with a critical capability to defend against terrorist and conventional threats.

Powered by two GE T700-701D engines, the AH-64 Apache is primarily used for distributed operations and deep precision strikes against relocatable targets, and also to provide armed reconnaissance when required in day, night, obscured battlefield and adverse weather conditions.
