PositiveID has signed an agreement with UTC Aerospace Systems’ ISR & Space Systems unit to support the latter in the execution of a US Department of Defense (DoD) contract.

Expected to be performed between March and September, the contract will support the DoD Joint United States Forces Korea Portal and Integrated Threat Recognition (JUPITR) programme, which aims to detect biological threats in order to protect US soldiers and allies.

As part of the agreement, PositiveID will provide its biological detection and identification technology, called microfluidic bioagent autonomous networked detector (M-BAND), for testing and evaluation.

PositiveID chairman and chief executive officer William Caragol said: "We are very pleased to work together with UTC Aerospace Systems to deliver M-BAND systems for testing and evaluation for the protection of our warfighters and supporters through the JUPITR programme."

The assessment is expected to baseline performance, reliability, maintainability, ease of use, and cost of operation to provide the "best of breed" and most affordable options for the US Army and Air Force.

Developed by MicroFluidic Systems (MFS), M-BAND continuously and autonomously analyses air samples to detect an array of airborne threats, such as bacteria, viruses, and toxins.

The technology was created under contract with the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Science & Technology directorate, and is designed to identify the release of pathogens into the air as part of a defence against potential terrorist attacks.

Led by the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD), and supported by the US Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC), the JUPITR programme introduces new instrumentation that increases speed and ease of biosurveillance equipment for the US Forces Korea (USFK).
