Harris has been awarded a contract for the delivery of its Falcon III RF-340M multi-channel manpack radio to the US Department of Defense (DOD).

Under the contract, the company will supply an unspecified number of RF-340M radios, which integrate two radio channels into a single chassis, enabling users to operate simultaneously on multiple networks for enhanced command and control.

"This is our second order for the RF-340M, demonstrating the growing interest in Harris’ next-generation, two-channel solution."

Harris RF Communications Department of Defense business president George Helm said: "This is our second order for the RF-340M, demonstrating the growing interest in Harris’ next-generation, two-channel solution for mounted and dismounted tactical communications.

"The RF-340M’s ability to send and receive voice and data over multiple networks simultaneously significantly enhances a warfighter’s situational awareness and mission command capability."

The RF-340M radio is designed to deliver the new mobile-user objective system (MUOS) satellite communications service without requiring additional hardware modules, minimising size, weight and power challenges in mounted and dismounted applications.

Capable of addressing emerging and unique mission requirements such as higher speed wideband networking, satellite communications and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, the radio also enables users to operate on multiple networks simultaneously.

Harris claims that the RF-340M is the smallest, lightest and most capable next-generation tactical radio available today, and can host all required US Government wideband and narrowband waveforms, including those required by US Special Operations Command. It also supports multi-channel cross-banding.

In August, the RF-340M became the first and only commercially developed radio to achieve National Security AgencyType-1 certification in anticipation of the US Army’s handheld, manpack and small-form factor (HMS) tactical radio programme.

Additional contract details, including its value and the delivery schedule, remain undisclosed.
