The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) has signed a declaration of intent with Ukraine, in an effort to increase cooperation.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two countries will collaborate to strengthen the capacity of the Ukrainian Government and its security forces, and to defend the country’s territorial integrity and its people.

Specifically, Canada will explore ways to build the defence capacity of Ukraine through the provision of general support training related to military police, medical and personal protective measures, to help the country defend itself from Russia.

"Canada stands firm in its commitment to the people of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression."

Canadian Defence Minister Rob Nicholson said: "Canada stands firm in its commitment to the people of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

"Through their important contributions to Nato’s assurance measures, our men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces are also effectively responding to Russia’s illegal and illegitimate actions in Ukraine."

Nicholson was also quoted by RT as saying: "Today, representatives of Canada’s military police will arrive in Ukraine to look into the possibilities of cooperation."

Canada has already donated non-lethal military supplies, including a range of targeted protection, medical and logistical equipment such as helmets, ballistic eyewear, protective vests, first aid kits, tents and sleeping bags.

The country also supplied military gear to expand the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including tactical communications systems, explosive ordinance disposal equipment, tactical medical kits, night visual goggles and winterised kits.

Ukraine is currently fighting pro-Russian rebels, who have declared independence in some eastern parts of the country.
