BAE Systems has upgraded the Brazilian Army’s 100th M113 armoured personnel carrier (APC) to the M113A2 Mk1 standard.
The upgrade was carried out in collaboration with the Brazilian Army, as part of a $41.9m contract awarded by the service in December 2011 for the modernisation of 150 M113B vehicles.

BAE Systems artillery and recovery vehicles director Adam Zarfoss said: "The delivery of the 100th upgraded vehicle is a direct result of our close working relationship with the army, developed through a strong technology sharing programme."
Under the contract, the vehicle hulls, hatches and ramps are being reused, while all other components, including the engines, transmissions and cooling systems, are being replaced or upgraded.
Using resources from local industry and Parque Maintenance five, the upgrade is designed to extend the service of the M113B fleet, bringing the vehicles in line with Brazil’s national defence strategy increasing defence capabilities.
The contract also includes a technology transfer to the army and training for army personnel.

The M113 is a military-tracked vehicle designed to transport 12 soldiers and a driver. It can also conduct amphibious operations, extended cross-country travel over rough terrain and perform high-speed operations on improved roads and highways.
More than 80,000 M113 vehicles in different variants are currently in use by at least 44 countries worldwide.
In addition to the M113 upgrade, BAE is also partnering with and transferring technology to Brazilian industry on other programmes, including the 40mm naval gun and flight controls for the KC 390 tanker aircraft.
