DRS Technologies has successfully completed the maiden test flight of its GS205-XRZ laser designating gimbal at Avon Park Air Force Range in Florida, US.

Operating from a US Special Operations Command platform, the gimbal executed multiple laser designation exercises that demonstrated its ability to bring a targeting capability to airborne and ground platforms.

GS205-XRZ, which is designed and manufactured by DRS Sensors & Targeting Systems, is a multi-sensor targeting system that offers true day / night optimal surveillance and targeting capabilities to all laser-guided weapons.

The gimbal uses a full-pulse interval modulation / pulse repetition frequency compliant laser designator.

Weighing less than 9lb and 6in in diameter, it is one of the smallest stabilised, lightweight and fully qualified targeting systems.

The system is available off-the-shelf for size, weight and power-constrained platforms. It is an extended-range version of the targeting system, fitted with a cooled infrared camera that includes a zoom optic, electro optical camera, laser pointer and eye-safe range finder.

In addition, optional B-Kits can be installed on multiple platforms such as ground vehicles and stationary forward operating base locations.
