Drone Aviation Corp (DAC) has successfully completed demonstration of a new integrated wireless aerostat video distribution capability at an undisclosed US Army facility.

Undertaken in collaboration with a defence prime contractor, the joint demonstration highlighted how existing army ground monitors and mobile devices can access secure wireless video footage from the Blimp in a Box (BiB) mobile intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) aerostat systems owned and operated by the US Department of Defense (DoD).

During the demonstration, the integrated wireless system was installed and flown for several days on a BIB aerostat to demonstrate the effectiveness of distributing secure, live video feeds from a tactical aerostat directly to ground based mobile devices such as one system remote video terminals (OSRVTs) and remote operations video enhanced receiver (ROVER) system.

"With the support of our customers and partners, we will continue to jointly evaluate how we can significantly increase the capability of the BiB and WASP tactical aerostat systems by enabling the data from our sensors to be seamlessly integrated into US Army networks."

Drone Aviation chief executive officer Felicia Hess said: "We are pleased with the results gathered from the initial round of technology integration testing. After more than six months of planning and integration, we accomplished our goal of enabling our aerostat platform to provide live aerial footage to various US Army-operated mobile assets.

"With the support of our customers and partners, we will continue to jointly evaluate how we can significantly increase the capability of the BiB and WASP tactical aerostat systems by enabling the data from our sensors to be seamlessly integrated into US Army networks."

Currently deployed with US ground forces, the OSRVT and ROVER systems are handheld or vehicle mounted video and telemetry systems designed to provide soldiers with enhanced situational awareness including real-time, full-motion video data collected from manned and unmanned platforms.

Equipped with a day and night electro-optical/infrared camera, the BiB is a tethered system designed to provide troops with semi-persistent, mobile ISR at the platoon level, and to extend communications.

Currently used in several DoD applications, the system has also completed a series of Network Integration Experiments, which effectively demonstrated its capability to provide mobile communications to the army.
