Wireless network communications firm Bittium is set to provide a new software upgrade for the Finnish Defence Forces’ Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) system.

Under a €2.8m contract, the company will upgrade the radio-based Bittium TAC WIN system, which is designed for tactical communications in the force’s M18 command, control and communications apparatus.

Delivery under the contract is expected to take place this year.

The upgrade package is expected to improve the performance, data transfer capacity and survivability of the software.

In 2011, the company received a contract from the Finnish Defence Forces to supply software-defined radio TAC WIN systems.

The forces exercised additional options in July 2014 and December last year.

Compatible with existing fixed and wireless network infrastructure, the Bittium TAC WIN facilitates both wired and wireless broadband data transfer IP connections.

Designed for use in adverse conditions, the system features automated functions and a tactical router, which enables connections to different types of terminals and other communication systems.

The system also features three radio head types, with each radio head covering its own frequency band area.
