GKN Aerospace has received a sub-contract from General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) to manufacture new fuel tanks for the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) AJAX platform.

Under the terms of the agreement, the company will provide rotationally moulded fuel tanks developed at the GKN Aerospace fuel systems facility in Portsmouth, UK.

The fuel tanks will feature the latest self-seal technology and explosion suppression foam for enhanced vehicle and troop protection.

GKN Aerospace Special Products Group senior vice-president Gavin Wesson: "This is a significant contract for GKN Aerospace’s fuel systems business on an important UK MoD programme.

"Our technological expertise will help to improve the safety of our troops as well as the vehicle performance in combat situations. We sincerely look forward to supporting the delivery of this impressive, next generation armoured vehicle."

The UK MoD had previously contracted General Dynamics UK to supply AJAX armoured fighting vehicles from 2016 through to 2023.

UK Defence Minister Philip Dunne said: "AJAX is the British Army’s first fully-digitised fighting vehicle. The fuel tanks system will include the latest self-sealing and explosion suppressant technologies, helping to keep our troops safe.

"It is another example of the innovative engineering behind the British Army’s new AJAX vehicle, which also features the 40mm cannon, with a range of almost two miles."
