Alion Science and Technology has secured a $137m contract from Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Defense Spectrum Organization (DSO) to improve efficiency and sharing between commercial and federal electromagnetic spectrum (EMS).

The US Department of Defense (DoD) must have reliable access to wireless frequencies as military forces depend on spectrum capabilities in modern warfare, Alion said in a statement.

Under the five-year multiple-award contract, Alion will perform spectrum research and development initiatives in partnership with DISA DSO.

"We’re ready to work with DSO to identify solutions that could mitigate or eliminate radio frequency interference."

The contract will also see the company providing EMS technical services, strategic spectrum planning and analysis, joint enterprise capabilities and advocacy in support of federal regulatory bodies.

Alion technology solutions group senior vice-president and manager Sean Pender said: "Securing the EMS domain is critical to our national defence and modern warfare systems; however, radio frequency interference poses a major threat to this goal, as it can impact the military’s access to wireless frequencies.

"Alion has more than 50 years of experience providing spectrum engineering support to the DoD, and we’re ready to work with DSO to identify solutions that could mitigate or eliminate radio frequency interference."
