L3 Technologies has received a vehicle transmission contract to support the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army’s K21 next-generation infantry fighting vehicle (NIFV) and light recovery vehicle (LRV) programmes.

Under the terms of the contract, L3 Technologies is expected to deliver 800hp vehicle transmission kits from the third quarter of 2017.

L3 Technologies chairman and chief executive officer Michael T. Strianese said: “We are pleased to receive this important award, which builds on our long-standing partnership with the Republic of Korea by delivering L3 systems that are the most widely used, battle-proven combat vehicle transmissions in the medium-weight class today.

Work on the project will be carried out by the company’s combat propulsion systems unit, with deliveries scheduled for completion by 2019.

In October 2008, Hanwha Defense Systems (formerly known as Doosan DST) signed a 457.8bn contract with the Defence Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA) of Korea to supply the first batch of K21 armoured vehicles.

Developed to reinforce the ROK army’s combat capabilities, the K21 NIFV will replace its existing K200 series IFVs.
