The US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Targets and Countermeasures Directorate has awarded a follow-on contract to Orbital ATK to provide rocket motor technical services (RMTS).

Under the $48m contract, Orbital ATK will support MDA in the sustainment of Trident I (C4) and Orion motors.

The Orion motors are used on both target vehicles and the ground-based interceptor vehicle.

The RMTS contract also covers services for CASTOR, Orbus 1A and Oriole motors, as well as other speciality support services such as radar signature testing and speciality tooling.

According to the contract, the firm will provide sustaining engineering, ageing and surveillance testing and analysis, motor logistics; storage and disposal, as well as static test support and flight test motor preparations over the next five years.

Work under the contract will be performed at the company’s Bacchus facility in Magna, Utah, with support from several other Orbital ATK facilities across the country.

The contract award coincides with multiple, long-term agreements signed between Orbital ATK and premier commercial ammunition suppliers.

Valued at more than $400m, the agreements will primarily focus on 5.56mm and .223 calibre ammunition manufactured at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri.

The agreements will run from next year to 2020.
